E Street Band drummer fills in for his son and friend of the band Jay Weinberg at Australian psych-rockers’ Forest Hills Stadium concert
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard brought out surprise guest Max Weinberg during their Saturday show in Queens, just a week after the E Street Band drummer’s son Jay joined the band onstage.
Over the past few years, former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg has cameoed with the Australian psych rockers, including last weekend at the group’s three-night Field of Visions II festival in Colorado.
With King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard similarly staging a three-show stand at Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium this weekend, the band hoped to bring out Jay again.
“In continuing with the tradition that we started over the last year or so, where we get our friend Jay Weinberg to come out and play a song with us. It’d be rude not to. But Jay’s busy, he’s down in Nashville, so Jay made a call. ‘Alright, I’m going to call dad,’” King Gizzard’s Joey Walker told the crowd.
“So, we got Max Weinberg, drove all the way from Atlantic City to come up and play a song with us, so give it up for fucking Max Weinberg.”
The longtime Bruce Springsteen and Conan O’Brien drummer then sauntered onstage, sticks in hand. “I just got nervous,” Walker quipped. Weinberg then joined the band as second drummer for a lengthy rendition of their “Hot Water.”
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Forest Hills Stadium run concludes Saturday night; the band will then hop a county to Brooklyn for a show at Under the K Bridge Park on Sunday.
