Rangers are well-positioned to wrap up a permanent deal for Czech international winger Vaclav Cerny. According to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking on the Football Insider Inside Track podcast, Besiktas will sell. A bid of roughly £5 million plus performance-related add-ons will tempt the Turkish giants.

It is a bargain price. The Ibrox hierarchy is looking for reliable wide options after a tough season. Loan signings like Andreas Skov Olsen simply failed to fire in the second half of the campaign. Rangers need more.

Wyness insists the Ibrox board view this as sensible business. There is very little financial risk attached to a £5 million fee. Plus, Cerny knows Glasgow. The Czech wide man understands the unique, physical demands of the Scottish Premiership and the intense pressure from the stands. No long adaptation period required here. He performed well during his previous stint in Scotland, which matters immensely to figures like Derek McInnes. Experience is gold in this league.

“I think they’ll get it done at about £5m, but I do think he’s exactly the type of player they need. He’s got the experience,” the Scottish businessman said.

“McInnes will want that Premiership experience as well. He’s a quality player and played well for Rangers. There’ll probably be some add-ons, but I think they can get it done at £5m, and it’s a very good move if they can get Cerny in.”

Why the Ibrox hierarchy must think twice?

Now, in June 2026, a decision looms. Paying single-digit millions for an international winger in his prime looks like brilliant value. The market is inflated. Yet, the scouting department must look closer. They need to scrutinise his recent injury record.

Tactically, Cerny is predictable. He cuts inside onto his left foot, looking for the far corner. Modern sides need more than that. They need wingers who can explode down the line, beat a full-back, and cross. If the goal is catching Celtic, squad fillers will not cut it. Rangers require elite creators.

Relying too heavily on past Premiership experience is a trap. It leads to tactical stagnation. Think of the costly errors this club made previously. Cerny should be a clever squad addition, not the main summer solution. Sign him if other targets fall through.
