Disney’s latest voyage to Motunui is heading home.
The live-action “Moana” will arrive to buy or rent on digital platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango on Sept. 8, followed by a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD release on Oct. 6.
The home release comes less than two months after the musical adventure opened in theaters on July 10. Directed by “Hamilton” filmmaker Thomas Kail, the remake stars newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson making the jump from animation to live action as the shape-shifting demigod Maui. Rena Owen, John Tui and Frankie Adams round out the principal cast as Gramma Tala, Chief Tui and Sina, respectively.

Moana 4K UHD Steelbook
The upcoming digital and physical editions will include a slate of bonus material, including a sing-along version of the film and behind-the-scenes features exploring Lagaʻaia’s casting, the construction of Motunui, Tiana Nonosina Liufau’s choreography and Liz McGregor’s costumes. Another feature reunites Lin-Manuel Miranda with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi to discuss reworking the original film’s songs and creating the new number “Along the Way.”
Disney will also release a limited-edition 4K UHD SteelBook on Oct. 6 featuring Lagaʻaia and Johnson as Moana and Maui alongside Pua and Heihei. Fans looking to complete the trilogy can pick up a three-film collection bundling the live-action movie with the original animated “Moana” and “Moana 2,” available digitally Sept. 8 and on DVD Oct. 6.
The home release follows a disappointing theatrical run for what had been positioned as one of Disney’s biggest releases of the summer. While the original 2016 animated film grossed roughly $684 million worldwide, adn 2024’s “Moana 2” became a billion-dollar blockbuster, the live-action remake opened to only $43.1 million domestically.
