The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has recognized the Aguacate Franja Michoacán (Michoacán Avocado Belt ) as a Protected Geographical Indication, with officials presenting a commemorative plaque at a ceremony on Tuesday.

The declaration was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on May 4.

The move will protect Hass avocados produced in a specific region of Michoacán in Mexico’s Bajío and is expected to strengthen the authenticity, traceability, and positioning of the avocados in national and international markets.

The Protected Geographical Indication encompasses 31 municipalities in Michoacán where avocado cultivation has taken place since the 19th century.

The designation applies to Hass avocados grown within the region, whose specific geographic and climatic conditions give the avocados unique qualities, including their oval shape, rough skin, creamy pulp and high oil content, according to the IMPI.

The protection certifies the origin, quality and reputation of the product, as well as differentiating it from other similar avocados produced outside the recognized area.

The Michoacán Avocado Belt has shifted from traditional avocado cultivating practices to a consolidated agro-industry in recent years. There are now around 48,000 producers, 94 packing plants and an overall business that generates more than 150,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.

“We received instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum to support the economic development of the state of Michoacán,” said Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard during the ceremony. “Geographical Indications are an important instrument for this, as they contribute to generating a social economy and fulfills [Sheinbaum’s] economic vision.”

The endorsement is expected to serve as a catalyst for strengthening the regional and national economies, said Ebrard.

IMPI Director General Vidal Llerenas Morales, said that the granting of the Geographical Indication gives the Hass avocado grown in the region greater value and visibility than other varieties.

Avocados are a highly nutritious fruit, rich in healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals, associated with benefits for the heart, digestion, vision, skin and blood sugar control. The Hass avocado contains potassium, magnesium, folic acid and vitamins C, E, K and B, among other nutrients.
