Today marks an auspicious day for Indian cricket as the date commemorates India’s first success in the biggest event in cricket. On this day 43 years ago, India lifted the 1983 World Cup title at the iconic Lord’s Stadium, putting the country on the map of the cricket world.
India’s historic triumph came as a landmark moment that completely transformed the landscape of Indian cricket and the sport as a whole. Captained by Kapil Dev, India defied all expectations by defeating the mighty West Indies in the summit clash on June 25, 1983.

The Indian team was crowned champions at Lord’s with a remarkable victory over the favourites, West Indies. The latter won the toss and opted to bowl first.

After being put in to bat, India were bowled out for just 183, with Krishnamachari Srikkanth top-scoring with 38 and Mohinder Amarnath contributing 26. Chasing a modest target, West Indies looked in control until captain Kapil Dev took a memorable running catch to dismiss Viv Richards, a moment widely regarded as the turning point of the final. Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal picked up three wickets each as India bowled out the two-time defending champions for 140.

India entered the tournament as massive underdogs, with West Indies chasing a third consecutive World Cup title. The triumph transformed cricket in India, inspiring an entire generation of players, including Sachin Tendulkar, who has often described it as a defining moment in his cricketing journey.

The road to the title was defined by one of the most iconic innings in ODI history. On June 18, 1983, India were reeling at a shocking 17/5 against Zimbabwe in a must-win World Cup clash at Tunbridge Wells when captain Kapil Dev produced a remarkable counterattack. He blasted an unbeaten 175 off just 138 balls, including 16 fours and six sixes, lifting India to 266/8 and keeping their World Cup campaign alive. Before 1983, India had only won a single World Cup match across the 1975 and 1979 editions (against East Africa)

West Indies won the first two World Cup titles (1975, 1979) and were the runners-up in 1983. India, on the other hand, have won the title twice, in 1983 and 2011. MS Dhoni captained the 2011 team to their second title after a gap of 28 years.

Australia remains the most successful team in ODI World Cups, claiming the title a record six times (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023).

Score Summary of the 1983 ODI World Cup Final: India 183 in 54.4 overs (Kris Srikkanth 38, Sandeep Patil 27, Andy Roberts 3/32) defeated West Indies 140 (Viv Richards 33, Jeff Dujon 25, Mohinder Amarnath 3/12) by 43 runs.
