England captain and Bayern Munich star Harry Kane has fond memories of Estadio Banorte (formerly Azteca).
After all, he netted what turned out to be the game-winner in what was arguably the most entertaining match of the 2026 World Cup, a 3-2 victory over host Mexico. Now the German giants — one of the most important clubs in Europe — are reportedly considering playing a game in the iconic stadium in southern Mexico City.
In an interview with Fox Sports on Saturday, Rouven Kasper, marketing director of the Bavarian club, confirmed the institution’s interest in staging a match in Mexico.
“The connection with Mexico is special,” he said. “The league has gained ground on television there, and the arrival of more Mexican players in the future could accelerate a visit … to the country.”
Kasper said Mexico represents a significant link for the Bundesliga and the teams participating in it, while also recognizing that the addition of Mexican players to the league could be a key factor in strengthening ties with the Mexican market.
The last time a Mexican international toiled in the Bundesliga was during the 2018-2019 season when defender Carlos Salcedo and midfielder Marco Fabián played for Eintracht Frankfurt. Other notable Mexicans to play in Germany include “Chicharito” Hernández and Andrés Guardado (both with Bayer 04 Leverkusen).
A Bayern Munich appearance in Mexico would also boost the Bundesliga, which is intent on consolidating its presence in various international markets. Bringing its teams and players closer to Mexican fans would reinforce the interest generated by TV broadcasts and open new commercial opportunities, he acknowledged.
The team boasts a renowned international track record and a fanbase that extends far beyond Germany’s borders, so playing a match on Mexican soil could become an attractive event for European football fans.
A hypothetical Bayern Munich match at Estadio Azteca would represent the ideal scenario for the Ballon d’Or winner to retrace his steps on the pitch where he and his England mates experienced glory.
