Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on a range of US goods came into effect on Tuesday, with no sign of a trade deal on the horizon. The counter-tariffs will apply to nearly C$28bn ($20bn; £15bn) worth of American products, from steel to furniture to cotton T-shirts, and will be as high as 50%. Fresh fish and lobster were also on the list, but Canada later omitted them after pushback from its seafood industry – a sign of the tricky balance it has to strike as it retaliates against its largest trading partner. Both US and Canadian officials have said they would like to…

Yet the night’s most memorable storyline began moments before kickoff and made Tallahassee and FSU a national punchline that had nothing to do with the performance on the field.AdvertisementFSU and SMU were scheduled to kick off at 7:35 p.m. on ESPN. Instead, the start was delayed nearly two hours after a power outage struck,…
Sometime in early 1867, a group of wealthy young men of possibly dubious habits gathered at a gymnasium in Mexico City. Frenchman Nicolas Poupard had run a fencing school in the city for some time but had recently lost much of his trade to a new arrival, Thomas Hoyer Monstery. In a showdown to demonstrate who was the master of combat sports, they staged a series of contests ranging from sword fighting to boxing. Whether these were exhibitions or duels is uncertain, but the truth probably lies somewhere in between. Monstery was quite a character and is worth a mention…

Daily Newsletter Plus, artists on feeling deceived by a widely advertised summer residency that lured them in and never materialized. Suzanne Jackson, “Wind and Water” (1975) (© Suzanne Jackson; photo Ruben Diaz, courtesy Ortuzar, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) The autumnal equinox isn’t for a few weeks, but we’re officially marking the start of another seasonal shift on the calendar: art-world fall. Nary a pumpkin-spiced drink is yet in sight, but many an empty plastic cup of cheap rosé will tumble down a Tribeca street this week as galleries and institutions let in a cool-ish breeze from the…
Paris FC had an underwhelming opening day to the Ligue 1 season, drawing 0-0 away to newly promoted ESTAC Troyes. However, they have won their last two, scoring three goals in each, beating OGC Nice (3-0) and then, more impressively, Olympique de Marseille at the Vélodrome on Sunday (2-3).Last season, the club, in their first season back in the top-flight, never really flirted with relegation, even if their decision to sack Stéphane Gilli midseason was motivated by these fears. Now, Les Parisiens are very much looking up the table. Backed by the Arnault family, they are bestowed with more means…
