After losing Morena nomination in Nuevo León, Tatiana Clouthier launches new movement of her own

After losing the Morena party’s internal contest to become its presumptive candidate for governor of Nuevo León, Tatiana Clouthier announced the formation of a new “movement” in the northern border state.

Clouthier, a former federal economy minister who more recently headed up the federal government’s Institute for Mexicans Abroad, announced the “Todos Con Conciencia” (All With Conscience) movement in a social media post on Saturday.

“Today we had a meeting with the territory and air team,” she wrote on Facebook, referring to her campaign team.

“They reflected and shared their feelings. We concluded that we’re not going for [political] positions but rather to transform #NL [Nuevo León] and we began the #TodosConConciencia movement. Nuevo León doesn’t deserve to be surrendered. Welcome to the revolution of consciences; we’re ceasing to be inhabitants and becoming citizens,” wrote Clouthier, one of six aspirants to Morena’s gubernatorial nomination in Nuevo León.

“Our recognition of the progress with the arrival of the 4T and our support for the president,” she added.

The 4T is the “fourth transformation” political movement led by President Claudia Sheinbaum and supported by the ruling Morena party.

Clouthier’s Facebook post referred to the establishment of a civil society movement rather than a new political party ahead of the June 6, 2027, elections.

The 62-year-old Sinaloa native — daughter of 1988 presidential candidate Manuel Clouthier — is clearly disappointed that she wasn’t selected as the Morena and 4T candidate for the gubernatorial election in Nuevo León, a state currently governed by the Citizens Movement (MC) party under the leadership of Governor Samuel García.

That honor is set to go to Clara Luz Flores Carrales, a former federal deputy and ex-head of the National Public Security System. Last Monday, Flores was designated as Morena’s “state coordinator of the transformation and national sovereignty” in Nuevo León, making her the party’s presumptive gubernatorial candidate. She was Morena’s candidate at the 2021 gubernatorial election in Nuevo León, at which she attracted 14% of the vote to place fourth.

Morena ‘got it wrong,’ says Clouthier

After the meeting with her team on Saturday, Clouthier told the newspaper Reforma that Morena “got it wrong” in selecting Flores as its “coordinator” in Nuevo León. Flores and most of Morena’s other state coordinators were selected via surveys conducted by Morena.

Clouthier told Reforma that the “Todos Con Conciencia” movement “will work from a citizens’ perspective to transform Nuevo León.”

She said that “the common denominator” among the members of her team who attended Saturday’s meeting is that they feel “betrayed.”

Clouthier asserted that Flores “doesn’t represent the values for which we were invited” to participate in Morena’s selection process.

“The party got it wrong. The party didn’t rise to the occasion — neither for our president nor for the movement,” she said.

Sheinbaum: ‘It’s not a matter for the president, it’s a matter for the party’

Asked at her Monday morning press conference about the movement announced by Clouthier, Sheinbaum said it was up to “the Morena compañeras” — party president Ariadna Montiel and party official Citlalli Hernández — to speak to her.

“It’s a matter for Morena,” she said.

“What I think is that a survey is the best way to see who can be the coordinator … of any political party, because it’s what the people think. One can have a perception as a person, but the survey gives you the people’s opinion,” Sheinbaum said.

She said that she had the highest regard for both Clouthier and Flores, and acknowledged that the former wants to speak to her. Sheinbaum said she was willing to speak to Clouthier, but reiterated that Morena’s selection of candidates or coordinators is “not a matter for the president,” but rather “a matter for the party.”

She also said that “personal ambitions should not be a cause of dispute.”

“That’s why I say the best ally is the people, and the best way to know what the people think when there isn’t a direct election is a survey. That’s my opinion,” Sheinbaum said.
