This initiative anticipated the central issues of today’s sustainable mobility, in which environmental considerations have become paramount. With these special trains that connected large cities such as Rome, Milan, Turin, Genoa, Trieste and Venice to Alpine resorts, FS combined respect for the environment and affordability, offering, even at the time, a true True Italian Experience.

On the environmental front, trains were, and continue to be, an eco-friendly alternative to road transport, reducing traffic, pollution and the impact of CO2 emissions. Using the train to reach the slopes meant travelling in a more sustainable manner, leaving the car at home and reducing our environmental footprint in mountain areas, which are often already fragile from an ecological standpoint.

At the same time, the service was notable for its social sustainability thanks to an affordable pricing policy: travelers could take advantage of a half-price ticket, bringing skiing – until then considered an elite sport – within reach of many more people. Families, young people and enthusiasts from all walks of life could participate in a day on the slopes, sharing experiences and socializing beyond economic and cultural barriers.

This Ferrovie dello Stato initiative demonstrated how public transport could play a strategic role in social inclusion, promoting not only mobility, but also cohesion and access to opportunities that were previously restricted to the few.

The ‘Snow Trains’ remind us of a model of responsible tourism that combines comfort, respect for the environment and solidarity, uniting people and areas in the pursuit of sustainability.

To this day, rail transport continues to support winter sports enthusiasts with an extensive network and dedicated promotions. Yesterday’s ‘Snow Trains’ model is still reflected today in a railway system that aims to make winter tourism more sustainable and affordable for everyone.
