August 19 commemorates UN World Humanitarian Day to honor people affected by crises around the world and to recognize those who risk their lives in humanitarian service.
Although the IAF is not a disaster relief organization, the agency has the unique ability to quickly and effectively mobilize community resources and provide support for grassroots organizations to build resilience in the face of natural disasters. In recent events such as the volcanic eruption in Guatemala this year, the earthquake that hit Mexico in 2017, and Hurricane Matthew in Haiti in 2016, the IAF was able to channel donations from private citizens, complementing existing and former grantee partner efforts to address community needs.
The IAF’s unique model of community-led development allows the agency to reach civil society directly with a cost-effective and holistic approach to development. Together with community partners and networks, the agency builds upon a long history of collaboration and humanitarian service between the U.S. and countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Below are some examples of how the IAF has supported community resilience in the aftermath of humanitarian crises. Learn more and join us in appreciating the remarkable work of our community partners and the grassroots development leaders who continue improving livelihoods even in the most difficult of circumstances.
