The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup by defeating the Portland Timbers 3-2 on Wednesday night at Banc of California Stadium.
Timbers’ David Guzmán scored an own goal in the 33rd minute before forwards Carlos Vela (38’) and Marco Ureña (51’) scored for the home side. Walker Zimmerman and Jordan Harvey logged the assists.
With the win, LAFC remains undefeated at home, while also becoming the third expansion team in MLS history to advance to the Open Cup semifinals. The Black & Gold will next play the Houston Dynamo with an 8:00 a.m. PT draw tomorrow to determine the date and location.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the oldest soccer competition in the United States, is an annual tournament open to all United States Soccer Federation (USSF) amateur and professional affiliated soccer teams. This year, 94 teams participated, including all 20 U.S.-based Major League Soccer clubs.
LAFC (10-4-5; 35 points) returns to league play this Sunday, July 22 on the road against Minnesota United FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on YouTube TV and UniMás 46.
