Tehran, Iran – The United States has reinforced its naval blockade on Iran’s southern ports, amid the escalating military confrontation between them. The US blockade on Iran was first imposed in mid-April and remained for over nine weeks. Weekly Newsletter Who is the antiquities dealer behind looted artifacts at dozens of museums across the United States? I just came back from a dreamy residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Northern California. The place is special not just for the breathtaking views of the Marin Headlands but also for the kind people who run it. I’m grateful to Louisa Gloger, Holly Blake, MJ Brown, and others on Headlands’ team. Shoutout also to the amazing Bay Area artists, writers, activists, and other Hyperallergic readers I got to meet in the past few weeks.   Meanwhile, our excellent editorial has…

Meg Stalter once again donned the bratty, curled wig of Mary Todd Lincoln last night, returning to her Broadway debut performance as the lead in Cole Escola’s Oh, Mary! after a weeklong absence due to bronchitis. Just prior to the Friday evening performance, Stalter posted an Instagram Story photo of herself, apparently in her dressing room at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre, with the note, “Planning on being back in the show tonight as long as my voice doesn’t give out.” All went as planned. “It spun up like crazy,” Xander Schauffele said as he just hit the ball out of the rough, as caught by the on-course mics. What makes this interesting to me is that he said this as the ball was not even at its apex. As amateur golfers, we tend to focus on the results and are a bit mystified by the actual process that led to it. How many of us can feel what Schauffele was describing? Few, I’d guess. We’d see where the ball landed and then decide whether it was a good swing or not. It highlights the…

High inflation is not good. It is a hidden tax on citizens, it saps business confidence and it acts as a brake on investment. At the national level, a country that persistently runs higher inflation than another tends to end up with a weaker currency, higher interest rates, more volatility and a long-run loss of competitiveness and real incomes relative to the lower-inflation country. For decades, that has been exactly the case of Mexico and the United States. Mexico has always had higher inflation and, partly as a result, a weaker currency and higher interest rates. In fact, part of…
