Jason Crow and Troy Downing rushed to serve in the weeks after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Crow “was angry” and wanted to “fight back.” Downing felt “the sense of violation” and wanted to be the “tip of the spear” in the country’s military response.
