Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro once again put Mexico at the forefront of international cycling after winning the 40th Deutschland Tour (Tour of Germany), one of the most prestigious stage races on the European calendar.
At 22 years old, this victory makes Del Toro the first Latin American cyclist to win the Tour of Germany, following his recent milestone of becoming the first Mexican cyclist in 36 years to win a stage of the Tour de France.

The star cyclist finished the four-stage race with an accumulated time of 17 hours, 39 minutes and 48 seconds, while Frenchman Louis Barré finished second, 53 seconds behind. Swiss rider Marc Hirschi completed the podium, 1:08 back.
Sunday’s final stage covered 156.5 kilometers around Heilbronn, with a route marked by constant climbs and descents.
With the German championship, Del Toro, originally from Ensenada, secured his twentieth professional title since winning his first in 2013 at the Tour de l’Avenir. In 2016, he also won the UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico and Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
The Tour of Germany, which ran from Aug. 19 to Aug. 23, also saw the participation of Edgar “Chucky” Cadena, 26, originally from Mexico City.
Chucky was Mexico’s national champion before Del Toro, and is part of a broader generation of athletes working to bring Mexican cyclists back to major competitions.
Participating in Team Storck-MRW Bau, Chucky tried to surprise with an attack 1.5 kilometers from the finish line. With a steady pace in the mountain stages, Chucky’s stamina on the toughest climbs allowed him to quietly climb the standings, securing the No. 10 spot overall.
