Noah Kahan’s four consecutive sold-out shows at Fenway Park last month did more than mark a career milestone — they underscored Boston’s growing power as one of the country’s most compelling live-entertainment destinations. And now, tourism organization Meet Boston is hoping the singer’s recent stint can help propel even more visitors to Beantown.

Boston has been energized by a wave of major cultural moments this summer. Think World Cup excitement (marked by the arrival of devoted Scottish Tartan Army soccer fans); America 250 celebrations; and the return of the Tall Ships, to name a few. Together, these events have helped position the city as a vibrant destination for visitors, fans, and artists alike. Kahan’s Fenway run added a distinctly New England soundtrack to that momentum.

Meet Boston has been central to that effort, showcasing the city’s cultural energy to a broader audience. As part of the push, the organization hosted guests at Kahan’s Boston shows to highlight the depth of the city’s entertainment, hospitality, and tourism appeal. With his New England roots and deep regional connection, Kahan offered a natural lens through which to tell that story.

Dave O’Donnell, Vice President of Strategic Communications at Meet Boston, frames the city’s music scene as both historic and increasingly contemporary. “Boston’s music scene is rooted in rich history but marches to a contemporary and ever-evolving beat,” he says. “With iconic spots like Wally’s, Brighton Music Hall, and Paradise Rock Club still featuring great live music, the city has also added newer venues such as Roadrunner at Boston Landing, Big Night Live in the West End, and MGM Music Hall adjacent to Lansdowne Street and just steps from the House of Blues. With major acts routinely playing Fenway Park and TD Garden, the city has a wonderful mix of venue sizes and neighborhood joints.”

That mix is helping Boston expand its role in the national live entertainment landscape. According to Pollstar, Boston is now the fifth-largest concert ticket market in the United States, selling nearly five million tickets a year and surpassing several other major markets. The ranking matters because it reflects more than a busy concert calendar; it signals sustained fan demand, a diverse venue ecosystem, and a live-event economy capable of supporting both arena-scale tours and neighborhood music scenes. Kahan’s four-show sellout was another clear indicator of that strength.

Editor’s picks

During the shows, Kahan repeatedly made clear how much the city and venue meant to him, calling Fenway his “favorite” place to play. That connection carried through each performance. The scale of the response was striking: nearly 40,000 fans inside the ballpark, with thousands more gathered outside the stadium, on nearby rooftops, and in surrounding buildings to catch a glimpse or hear the music. The scene spoke not only to Kahan’s reach, but also to Boston’s capacity to turn a concert into a citywide event.

Singer-songwriter and eight-time Boston Music Award winner Will Dailey described Boston’s music culture as powerful precisely because it has often had to build itself without the same industry infrastructure found in larger entertainment hubs: “Within its dominant sports culture, tech, higher education, and history, the music culture gets overlooked,” he says. “It’s one of the deepest and richest in the country. Minus any kind of music business infrastructure, it survives purely on grit — that is the secret spice.”

On Kahan’s impact specifically, Dailey added, “I grew up emboldened by the fact that Buffalo Tom, Belly, Morphine, and Dropkick Murphys called Boston home. Noah Kahan is doing that for some young music dreamer right now. Boston is a music city that hasn’t fully capitalized on itself yet and that’s part of what makes this moment exciting.”

In a summer already filled with global attention and civic pride, Kahan gave Boston another defining moment — and the city looked more than ready for it.

Up next for the city: another playoff push for the Red Sox and the return of the NBA’s Celtics and the NHL’s Boston Bruins. Kacey Musgraves, Charli XCX, Olivia Rodrigo, and Rush, meantime, are just some of the big artists taking their tour to Boston’s TD Garden this summer and fall. Find tickets here.
