Lady Gaga’s “The Dead Dance” from Wednesday was a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 last September. Now the song, which Gaga co-wrote with Andrew Watt and Henry Walter Russell (Cirkut), is nominated for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics. It’s Gaga’s first Emmy nod for songwriting. “Til It Happens to You,” which Gaga performed in The Hunting Ground, won in this category in 2016, but the Emmys credited only Diane Warren as the songwriter.

Gaga has received four other Primetime Emmy nods in other categories, for Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden, Super Bowl LI Halftime Show Starring Lady Gaga and a pair of specials with Tony Bennett, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live! and One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.

Trey Parker is also among the nominees for outstanding original music and lyrics for writing both music and lyrics for “Christian Woman” for South Park. It was one of three nominations for Parker this year. He’s also nominated for outstanding animated program and outstanding character voice-over performance for portraying Satan on the show. Parker has won five Primetime Emmys and this year was voted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame alongside Matt Stone, the co-creator of South Park.

Other nominees in the category include a song that last year’s winner in the category, Christopher Lennertz, co-wrote with Daveed Diggs for The Boys. Lennertz won last year for “Let’s Put the Christ Back in Christmas,” also for The Boys.

The category also includes songs written for Hacks, The Pitt and Spider-Noir.

Hans Zimmer received his eighth Primetime Emmy nod as one of the composers of Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age, which is nominated for outstanding music composition for a documentary/nonfiction or reality program (original dramatic score). Zimmer has won five Grammys and two Oscars but has yet to win a Primetime Emmy.

Nora Felder is nominated for outstanding music supervision for her work on Stranger Things. She won in that category in 2022 for her work on the show.

Michael Bearden is nominated for outstanding music direction for his work on the Oscars for the second year in a row.

Daniel Pemberton, Dave Porter and Jeff Beal were among this year’s double nominees in music categories.
