Austria have beaten World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1, in an absorbing Group J clash in Santa Clara.
Romano Schmid curled a beautiful effort beyond Yazeed Abulaila in the 20th minute, before Ali Olwan’s own sensational finish — in off the far post just five minutes after half-time — gave Jordan the goal their endeavour had deserved.
Half-time substitute Marko Arnautovic had a goal ruled out for handball in the build-up just before the second-half hydration break, but from another corner after the restart, Yazan Al-Arab deflected the ball into his own net with 14 minutes remaining.
Arnautovic then finally got his goal in added time from the penalty spot.
Both teams are in Group J alongside defending champions Argentina, who beat Algeria 3-0 earlier today thanks to an historic Lionel Messi hat-trick in Kansas City.
