Mexico’s militant teachers’ union, the CNTE, has threatened a national strike and occupation of Mexico City’s main plaza, the Zócalo, deliberately timed to coincide with the start of the 2026 World Cup — with the opening ceremony just 15 kilometres away. The union’s grievances centre on what it considers an insufficient 9% salary and benefits increase offered by the Education Ministry, as well as demands for pension reforms and a review of broader education policy.
