After an eye-opening loss during the first round of elections earlier this month, incumbent Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known mononymously as Lula, staged a major comeback yesterday evening, defeating rival far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro in a tight presidential race. In a stark rejection of the region’s rightward pivot, Lula’s victory has yielded a deluge of memes exemplifying Brazilian digital culture’s embodiment of national pride and identity and its broader global influence across social media.
With nearly 52% of the votes, Lula’s win marks the progressive politician’s second consecutive term and fourth term overall as president. As a founding member of Brazil’s Workers’ Party, Lula has consistently demonstrated his allegiance to ending food insecurity, increasing environmental protections, advocating for Indigenous territories and sovereignty, advancing labor rights and social equity, funding the arts and culture sector, and reinforcing national commitment to democracy, among other aligned policies.
Senator Bolsonaro, son of far-right former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of criminal conspiracy and sentenced to 27 years in prison last year after trying to incite a coup over Lula’s third-term win in 2022, has publicly refused to recognize Lula’s victory after the election was called. Lula’s comeback flouts the United States’s aggressive intervention tactics in Brazil’s political landscape, which escalated significantly after Donald Trump imposed a 50% import tariff on Brazilian goods in retaliation against the prosecution of President Bolsonaro.
For Brazilians who headed to the polls in droves to vote for Lula, this win has sparked a new wave of online celebration and optimism. One of the nation’s greatest cultural exports is its fast-paced digital sense of humor, which has spawned ubiquitously used memes from the “Confused math lady” to “Please come to Brazil.” As a facet of free speech in response to the political landscape, Brazil’s gloves-off meme culture has both supplemented the far-right effort of electing the senior Bolsonaro and relentlessly skewered his presidency.
