Clayface might have been a considerably nicher choice for a feature film than DC’s “Supergirl” and “Superman,” but that didn’t stop audiences from showing out to catch the Batman supervillain’s gory, nightmare-inducing origin story at the box office this weekend.

The new release generated $10.4 million from 3,458 North American theaters on Friday, taking the No. 1 spot. It’s a strong start for the film, which looks to pull in $24 million by Sunday. “Superman” brought in $618.72 million worldwide over the course of its 2025 theatrical run, while “Supergirl” was considered a bomb with $126 million against a $170 million budget earlier this year. In comparison, “Clayface” cost $44 million to produce.

Directed by James Watkins, “Clayface” follows the titular Batman villain, a rising movie star also known as Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), who volunteers for a highly experimental medical procedure after his face is severely disfigured. Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan also star. Variety’s Guy Lodge called the film “its own ugly animal; perhaps the characters and conflicts introduced here would pall if given the franchise treatment, but in the context of a single, genre-melding romp, they’re fresh and ickily enjoyable.”

A24’s much-hyped Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” landed in second place on Friday, making $6.14 million from 2,655 North American theaters, up from 855 at opening weekend. The buzzy doc has made $31.7 million domestically so far. Rival estimates suggest the film will gross another $20 million by Sunday.

Comedian Nathan Fielder and “Primetime” filmmaker Lance Oppenheim quietly worked on the movie for more than three years, which offers an unhinged look at the Theranos founder a month before she began an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors. In addition to being eligible for best documentary feature at the 99th Academy Awards, the film will also be submitted across the board as seen on A24’s awards site: best picture, director, production design, cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, sound and original score.

Laika’s “Wildwood,” another new release, landed in third place on Friday, grossing $4.28 million from 2,942 North American theaters. Featuring a voice cast that includes Carey Mulligan, Jacob Tremblay and others, the stop-motion film looks to bring in $11.2 million by Sunday. Directed by Travis Knight, “Wildwood” revolves around a teenage girl who travels with a classmate into an enchanted forest after her brother is abducted. Strong reviews should continue to propel the lavish film at the box office, which carries a substantial $100 million price tag.

Black Bear’s “Wicker” followed in fourth place, earning $2.36 million on Friday from 1,471 North American theaters. The offbeat romantic comedy, directed by Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer, is targeting a $5.5 million opening weekend.

Described as an “audacious comedic fable,” “Wicker” tells the love story of an ostracized fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who commissions a husband from the local basketmaker (Peter Dinklage). Alexander Skarsgård plays said husband. Elizabeth Debicki also stars.

Coming in fifth was Legendary Entertainment’s “Street Fighter.” The action film grossed $2.34 million on Friday and should add another $8.4 million by Sunday, bringing its cumulative gross to $46.7 million.

“Street Fighter,” directed by Kitao Sakurai, stars Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji as two estranged fighters in the 90s who are recruited to enter a tournament that forces them to face off against each other.
