L.A. County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis will join Department of Public Social Services DPSS Director Antonia Jiménez and Toy Loan team members to host the annual Backpack Giveaway for low-income children ages 5 through 17 #News
This year’s distribution is needed more than ever to ensure that students have what they need to start a successful school year. This event will also offer an opportunity for the families referred by their DPSS case workers to receive free COVID-19 vaccinations on site from the Department of Public Health.
Approximately 500 hundred backpacks filled with rulers, pens, pencils, notebooks, calculators, erasers and more will be given away. Over the past five years, L.A. County employees have generously donated over 3,600 backpacks and school supplies to local children. To practice physical distancing, all items will be placed into vehicles as families drive through the event. All families must pre-register for an appointment to receive backpacks.
Chair Solis and DPSS Director Antonia Jiménez will make brief statements to thank donors and acknowledge the special efforts of Oakwood High School senior Owen Lichtman and his Student 2 Student organization for donating 500 backpacks to this year’s giveaway. Owen was inspired to create Student 2 Student after participating in the 2020 DPSS holiday Adopt-A-Family Program.
