Training in Las Vegas, Davis receives a visit from his two-year-old daughter who reminds her father why he’s fighting, and what’s at stake. “She makes me train harder because I watch her, and I want to give her a way better lifestyle than me coming up,” Davis says. “She definitely brings the softness out of me when I’m around her … because I’m not just living for myself no more, I’m living for my daughter.”
It was an emotional training camp for Santa Cruz, whose father Jose Sr., spent weeks in the hospital battling COVID-19 alone. “We were heartbroken and we were crying,” Santa Cruz recalls as he contemplated life without the Santa Cruz patriarch. “I was thinking, man, I wish I could have said goodbye to my dad one last time. I could have hugged him and said I loved him. The doctors said he died twice. We prayed and we asked God to make a miracle.”
