We are continuing to balance the health of our community members and our economic resiliency efforts. While it’s difficult to endure further closures this week, it is vital to protect our residents as Los Angeles County sees increases in community spread of COVID-19 and more hospitalizations. It will take all of us working together to keep our communities safe from a virus that is still very present in L.A. County and to maintain our progress to flatten the curve.
Of course, Independence Day will look different this year. There won’t be any parties or large neighborhood events, but that doesn’t mean we won’t celebrate! We can commemorate the 4th of July by barbecuing the same meals our loved ones have made for generations, listening to patriotic songs, decorating our homes in red, white, and blue, and spending time with family members closest to us. Many of our Fifth District cities and local organizations are hosting fun virtual events that we can enjoy from the comfort of our living room or backyard. There are virtual parties with music and family activities, including the Rose Bowl Americafest, the Santa Clarita 5k run, Arcadia’s Patriotic Festivities video series, and the Grand Park Block Party, which I’ve been proud to play a small part in! Some cities are also hosting home decorating contests to show off their style and skills, including Sierra Madre, Monrovia, Glendora, and San Marino, plus so many more.
I hope your family has a restful, safe, and happy 4th of July. While we stay home, I know we are still proud to reflect on the unity, diversity, tradition, and freedom that makes our nation and our county special.
