Mayor of London statement on the rise in national rail fares

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan –

“Rail passengers are sick and tired of hikes in their national rail fares year after year. By January, commuter rail fares will have increased by more than 10 per cent since 2016, as passengers continue to face the daily misery of delays and cancellations on Government-run services.

“In London I’ve managed to freeze TfL fares – there’s no excuse for the private rail companies not doing the same.

“The current system of large rail franchises is failing, with their focus on profits rather than passengers. It’s time to put TfL in charge of suburban rail routes – bringing the benefits of the London Overground to the wider rail network.”
