Foreign Affairs Minister to attend World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will be in Davos, Switzerland from January 22 to 25, 2019, to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting.

The Minister will meet with her counterparts and global business and political leaders to advance Canada’s international interests. She will use the opportunity to reinforce Canada’s commitment to the rules-based international order. She will also engage partners on international priorities, including democratic values; the defence of human rights, the rule of law and freedom of the press; climate change; economic growth that benefits everyone; and other pressing international crises around the world.

  • The WEF Annual Meeting brings together the world’s private-sector, public-sector and civil-society leaders to focus on international solutions.
  • With the theme Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, this year’s meeting will aim to address global challenges while recognizing the growing complexity of a world shaped by the competing and conflicting narratives, values and ambitions of nations, industries and societies.
  • This will be Minister Freeland’s second time attending the WEF annual meeting as Minister of Foreign Affairs. She previously attended the conference as the Minister of International Trade.
  • Minister Freeland will be joined in Davos by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development; the Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance; and the Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification.
