The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:
“Canada is deeply saddened by the tragedy caused by the Sunda Strait tsunami in Indonesia. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and wish a swift recovery to those injured.
“Our embassy and humanitarian partners on the ground are assessing and closely monitoring the situation. Canada stands ready to assist in helping communities affected by the tsunami.
“At this time, we are not aware of any Canadians who have been affected by the tsunami. Consular officials are in contact with local authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens, if needed.
