Canada calls for free and fair elections in Maldives

September 13, 2018 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement in advance of the September 23 presidential elections in Maldives:

“Canada remains concerned by the serious degradation of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Maldives.

“It is crucial for the country’s future to hold without delay credible and transparent presidential elections , free of violence and intimidation. Canada calls on the Government of Maldives to respect the independence of the parliament and judiciary, release political prisoners, restore fundamental freedoms—including freedom of opinion and expression and of peaceful assembly and association—and stop its repression of legitimate opposition activity.

“Canada calls for an electoral process that reflects the will of the Maldivian people and ensures a stable and peaceful Maldives.”
